「英語にハマリませんか？」No.6

今回は、「Car Talk」からです。

中2を担当する教師からの電話を受けた司会者は早速、
「8th grade」ネタを始めます。

大部分の人は、中学校ぐらいまでに習った知識で十分生きていける。
その後に習うことは無駄だという、日本でもよくある理屈です。
それを「Car Talk」流に言うと次のように展開となります。

8th graders, those are the ones that are the smartest people in the world! 
As soon as they get finished with the 8th grade, tell them not come back
to school ever again.  Everything they will learn from then on, they will
never use.

You know what happens?  
All useful stuff you learned up until the 8th grade, anything you learn
afterwards will crowd them out.  You forget important things.

Remember what Sherlock Homes said, the mind is like an attic,
for everything you cram in there, something else has to come out. 
You want them to forget everything for the sake of learning,
for example, calculus, which you never use.

「the smartest people」というのがいですね。
日本語ではこういう文脈ではなかなか使わない表現かもしれません。
（「これぐらいの年が、ある意味、一番頭いいよね」というのはあり
ですね）

3行目の「その後に習う知識は使うことはない」というのは、日本でも
よく言います。違いは、ここからもうひと押しするところです。

「crowd them out」（なるほどね）とか、言い方を変えながらポイントを
繰り返す。これが向こうの人たちがよく話すように聞こえる要因の
ひとつでしょうね。さらに、

だめ押しが、なんとシャーロック・ホームズからの引用です。
内容的には大したことがないけど、こういう名言（？）とか逸話
（Anecdote）というのは覚えておくと会話がカラフルになるという
見本ですね。

それから、「mind」なんですね、一杯になるのは、日本語で言うと
脳（脳みそ）ですが。
