「英語にハマりませんか？」No.24

進行中の読書紹介ということで「The Reckoning」を取り上げます。

700ページちょい（細かい活字なのでかなりの文字数です）のペーパーバッグですが、
100ページぐらい進んでいます。

現在はヘンリーフォードの隆盛とアメリカ自動車業界の成長にかげりが出てくる時代です。

最初から振り返った方が順序的にはよいのでしょうが、現在読んでいる部分がもっとも
新鮮で、フレーズや単語を取り上げる場合に文脈に基づく感覚がまだ残っているという意味で、
ここから始めて、順次、前を振り返ります。内容をまとめるのではなく、印象に残るフレーズや
単語をとっかかりにして内容を振り返る形とします。

まず、ヘンリーフォードの技術者としての資質が次のように語られています。

He had a gift for looking at a machine and quickly understanding it, not only repairing it
but making it work better. The timing of his career could not have been more perfect
for a man of his gifts, for he came to manhood at precisely the beginning of the modern
machine age. (p.72)

「機械をちょっと見るだけでその仕組みが理解できて、しかも修理や改善もできる」という
天賦の才について一文で説明しています。

私の感覚から言うと、looking at a machineはgiftにかからなくてもと思うのですが、一連の
流れということなんでしょうね。似たような英文を書く場合の参考になります。

次は、「… could not have been more perfect」、「could not have been better」と同様の表現
ですね。

それから「for」の後の文章で、彼が如何に時代の寵児であったかを説明しています。
やはりうまいもんです。

デトロイトに出てきて、エジソンの工場に勤めたりして、最初は簡単なデザインの安価な
腕時計を作り、大量生産しようと考えるのですけど、たくさん売らなければならないので
断念したということです。

そのうちに、車の道に進むことになります（エジソンからもアイディアを評価されています）。
最初の会社はつぶれ、次もつぶれ、3回目にテイクオフしています（やっぱり、たくさん考えて、
失敗しているのですね）。

そして、Time and Motion Studyで有名なTaylorから学んで大量生産システムを確立します。

一方で、車がアメリカで成功したのは、石油の発見とぴったりタイミングがあったことも
大きいようです。

The coming of Ford was almost perfectly synchronized with the discovery in the American
Southwest of vast new reserves of oil. (p.82)

そして、車はアメリカを急速に変えていきます。

The availability of cheap energy and an inexpensive mass car soon transformed the
American landscape. Suddenly there were roads everywhere …….. The car stimulated the
expansiveness of the American psyche and the rootlessness of the American people; a
generation of Americans felt freer than ever to forsake the region and the habits of their
parents and strike out on their own. (p.86)

「the expansiveness of the American psyche and the rootlessness of the American people」
というのは、何か分かるような気がします。日本人とは真逆という感じかな。
