「英語にハマりませんか？」No.64

All the President’s Menの第5章に入ります。

2人の記者は、さまざまな証言や情報から事件の中心人物がMitchelであるという

感触を深めます。

（「Bernstein and Woodward thought that signs were beginning to point 

unmistakably toward John Mitchel.」）

再生委員会を辞めた後もいろいろコントロールしていたという話が聞こえてくる。

たとえば、

「Mitchel helped draft many of the non-denial denials which were being 

issued in response to their stories.」（この言い方、皮肉たっぷりです）

同時に、彼の妻Marthaの面白い言動が聞こえてきます。

（このパラグラフは、「And there was his wife」という書き出しで始まります）。

彼女は、汚い世界にはもう関わりたくない（sick of the whole operationと

公言している：

「I am not going to stand for all those dirty things that go on ……. I am 

black and blue」（精神的なダメージを受けた（傷だらけ）ということなのでしょうね）

Woodwardは彼女にインタビューしたいと考え、Mitchelが住んでいるニューヨークの

Essex Houseにアポなし突撃します。

実は、Woodwardは、1年ほど前、Marthaと接触しています。

ウォーターゲートの近くの発電施設からの排煙公害について取材した時、Marthaは

市役所に対する抗議文書の署名者の1人であり、記事を見たMarthは電話してきて、

ここで発電されている電気はホワイトハウスと司法省にも供給されていると指摘する

Woodwardに対して、

「Honey, I don't care if my John (Mitchel) and Mr. President have to work 

by candlelight ……」

ということで、

「she had been considered something of a truth-teller in Washington, 

though a little bit wiggy perhaps」（正直な人――行き過ぎはあるが）

Woodwardは、1階の公衆電話から彼女の部屋に電話すると本人が出てくる。

「She sounded jovial and happy for the chance to chat」ということで、しばら

くあれやこれやと話す。

さらに部屋をたずねてノックするとMarthaが出てくる。

（「I am embarrassed.  You caught me with grease on my face」）

（どういう顔だったんでしょう？）。

ウォーターゲート事件について聞くが、「You tell me」とかはぐらかし、そのうち、

「She began fidgeting」（いらだってくる）以前にジャーナリストからの電話で言った

「dirty politics」などの話は出てこない。一方で、来るべき大統領選挙ではニクソンが

圧勝すると断言する。

Woodwardはこのインタビュー記事を「Post Style」というセクション向けに書くが、

「it had been a wasted trip」となった（掲載されなかったということかなとふと思った

けど、何も有益な情報が得られなかったという意味でしょうね）。

一方、再生委員会の会計責任者であったSloanに子供が生まれたと聞き、思い切って

（after debating with himself for a while）お祝いの花を贈る。

「he was concerned that his gesture might be misunderstood.  There was 

no denying that his motivation was motivated by self-interest.」

（これは当然の心理でしょうね）

事件についてのインタビューを申し込むと、その2日後連絡があり、Bernsteinと

Woodwardは、Sloanの家を訪れる。

「A framed Christmas card picturing the President and Mrs. Nixon ..... was 

hung near the kitchen table.  There was a scrawled message of the Chief 

and the First Lady.」（やっぱり、大統領の間近で働くというのは大変な経験ですよね）

3人の会話は、再生委員会の上司Stans（金庫番―ブログ44参照）がどこまで知って

いたかが話題となるが、Sloanは上司をかばい、知らなかったのではないと主張する。

そこで、

「Bernstein tried playing devil's advocate saying that Stans would be derelict 

had he not ask to be kept informed of disbursals of money from his own safe.」

「Derelict」－職務怠慢/無責任

「devil’s advocate」―これはよく使われる表現です。自分はそうは思っていないけど、

（議論を起こすために）あえて反対の立場をとるということ。

Sloanとの話は続きます：

「Discussions kept moving around the edges of the secret fund.」

この資金が適法な情報収集活動（intelligent gathering activities, such innocuous 

tasks as recording the opponent’s speeches）という記者の問いかけに対して、

Sloanは、「circumstances forced him to assume the worst」（状況を総合的に

判断すると悪い方向を考えざるを得ない）と答えます。

彼が知っている秘密資金の支出権限を持っていたのは5人である。

そのうちの1人がMitchel。

「But that was not proof Mitchel had known of the bugging.　There was a　

remote possibility that they had gone off on their own and spend money 

on unauthorized projects.」（これだけではミッチェルが事件を指揮していたことには

つながらない）

Sloanによれば、秘密資金の拠出が指示されるとMitchel（当時Justice Departmentに

いた）に電話をして許可を受けていた。

ということは、Mitchelは、Attorney Generalという公職にあった時に違法な目的に

使用される資金の拠出権限を持ち、行使していたことになる。

Sloanは、残りの2人の責任者については名前を明かさない（CRPではない)。

1人はWH、もう1人はワシントン関係者ではない。

Woodwardは、Sloanに初めて会ったわけであるが、

「he was impressed by his care and his unwillingness to give the names 

of persons he had no reason to think had done anything wrong.  

His credentials as a source seemed impeccable.」

「impeccable」－faultless, flawless, irreproachable

こういう意味的には難しくないが、長い、ちょい構造が複雑な文章をさっと理解する

というのは大切です。なめてはいけません。

Sloanは、どうしてこういう違法行為が行われることになったかという原因について、

「overzealousness, overkill, a desire to leave anything to chance in the effort 

to reelect the president」という考えを述べます。

ここで面白い表現が出てきます。

「One breathed a rarefied air when one was in the President’s service」

Web辞書では特に決まったイディオムということでは出ていません。

大統領に仕えるという、超エリートの空気（世界）にひたってしまって、世間の常識を

忘れてしまうということですかな。

ということで、

真相の一端が少しずつ明らかになってきます。
