「英語にハマりませんか？」No.66

All the President’s Menです。

ウォーターゲート事件にも使われた秘密資金を管理していたホワイトハウスの高官は

誰なのか、記者とSloanの禅問答が続きます。

疑われるのは3人。

まず、1人目（Colson）について聞くと、Sloanは、

「He was too crafty, too careful to put himself in jeopardy that way.  If that had 

been Colson, he would have done it through someone else, and that had not 

happened. 」（いいですね！仮定法過去の教材です）

「crafty」－良さそうな意味に思えますが、悪賢いということですね。

次のErlichmanは選挙にはあまり関わっていないので、Haldemanではないかと

問いかける。

（「Because he was the overseer of CRP and because of his reputation for 

autocratic control of the White House staff - plus he was the President’s 

eyes and ears in the campaign - was a more logical choice」）

しかし、

「Sloan would not say yes or no, but he said nothing to steer the reporters 

away from Haldeman, as he did with Colson.」

（なるほどね。こういう違いに気づくのが敏腕記者というものですね）

さらに、

「Bernstein threw out a name Woodward had never heard before (Kalmbach 

- ニクソン大統領個人の顧問弁護士) ….. It was a guess.」

Sloanは驚いた顔をする。

この弁護士は、ホワイトハウスに関わる色々なプロジェクトを仕切っていることでも

知られており、

「The prospective clients who had business with the government could not 

talk to him for less than $10,000」（高いような、安いような）

最後に

「Sloan said he did not want to get into a guessing game.」（この表現使えそう）

いずれにしても、Haldemanについての疑惑が浮上してきた。

2人はワシントンポストに戻り、各自のソースに確認を行う。

Woodwardのソースの1人（政府機関内部）から、資金の拠出責任者の最初の3人に

ついて、また、Bookkeeperの証言についても確認を得る。

また、残り2人については名前を上げなかったが、

「It was certain that the money had paid for espionage against the Democrats」

Haldemanの名前をぶつけてみるが、答えは無い。

BernsteinとWoodwardは、Bradlee編集主幹との会議に臨む。

ここでのBradlee（編集主幹）の振る舞いやバックグラウンドがなかなか面白い。

「During discussions …… Bradlee frequently picked up an undersized rubber 

basketball and tossed it toward a hoop attached by suction cups to the picture 

window.  The gesture was indicative of both the editor’s short attention span

and a studied informality.」

へー、アメリカらしいな。

説明として、この行動には、彼の注意力が長続きしない（気が短い）ことと、計算された

（studied）ざっくばらんさ（自分は形式にとらわれないことを見せる）、という2つの意味が

あるということです。

そして、

「there was an alluring combination of aristocrat and commoner about Bradlee.」

（貴族的な面と庶民的な面がうまく合わさって独特の魅力を生み出しているということ

でしょうね）

ハーバード、海軍、フランス駐在と華麗な経歴に加えて「police beat report（さつ回りの

記者というやつですね）」の経験もある。

部下の1人によれば、Bradleeは「hard-charging（扱いが難しい）and obstreperous

（手に負えない）」になる場合がある（公式のパーティーでBradleeがタバコをデミタス

カップに押し付けて消す！）。

それでも、「he was one of the few persons who could pull that kind of thing 

and leave the hostess saying how charming he was.」だそうです。人徳というやつ？

肝心の編集会議では、Bradleeは、記者達の説明（Haldemanについての情報を含む）を

聞き、「Are you certain on Mitchel？」と聞きます。

記者たちは少しためらいながら記事にできると答えます。

Bradleeの編集方針（philosophy）―「A daily newspaper cannot wait for the 

definitive account of events.」（多少のリスクは覚悟でということですな）を理解した

上での答です。

記者達は、

「Mitchel is not someone to be trifled with, and they are now playing hardball.」

であることを認識し、

「they would take a bigger step than either of them had ever taken」

であると実感します。

（これはなかなかうまい表現です。ついに本格的な勝負の時（hardball）がやってきたこと

（本丸を攻めるということですな）が分かります。

6pmまでに原稿が出来上がり、ちょっとした修正の後、記事として固まります。

Mitchelその他5人が運営する秘密基金、それが民主党についての情報収集活動に

使われてきたこと、色々なソースから得られた情報の一応の集大成で、

ウォーターゲート事件という、ちっぽけな侵入事件がホワイトハウスにつながっていることが

初めて報道されたことになります。
