「英語にハマりませんか？」No.68

さあ、All the President’s Menです。

今回のやり取りはなかなか面白いです。

Bernsteinは、CRPにコメント（というか、恒例の否定（rites of denial）を求めます。

担当者は、

「I think your sources are bad.  They provide you with misinformation.」

とだけ答えます。それ以上は一切答えようとしません（he could not be budged to 

discuss the specifics）（頑迷に拒否ということですな）。

その後、夜11時頃になって同じ担当者からMitchelのコメント（秘密資金からの拠出に

ついて何も知らないし、管理もしていないと全否定）を伝えてくる。

この回答からBernsteinは「soft spots」を見つけます。

資金の存在については否定していないし、CRPの会計について管理していないという

のは「technically correct」（建前上は正しい）にすぎない（会計責任者はSloanでした

から）。

（この「technically」はアメリカ人よく使いますね。私も好きです。

一例を挙げると、昔アメリカの友人が来日するので1泊9,000円以下の宿の手配を

頼まれたが、朝飯付き1万円しか見つからないので事情を説明して「technically 

within your budget」と言ったら納得していました。）

ということで、Bernsteinは「It is the cleverest denial yet.」と皮肉を言います。

Bernsteinは11時半すぎにMitchelを直撃します。

記事を読むと、「Jeeeesus！」と「primal scream（原始のおたけび）」を繰り返します。

ここで出てくる罵詈雑言が面白い：

「Katie Graham's gonna get her tit caught in a fat wringer if it’s published!...... 
That’s the most sickening thing I ever heard.」

この「get her tit caught in a fat wringer」というのは何でしょう？

品が悪いまでは分かりますが。

ネットで調べるとちゃんと出てきました！

まず、Katie Grahamはワシントンポスト紙の当時の社主です（ご主人の死去に伴って

就任）。

一方、「get her tit …….」のフレーズについては、詳しい解説がありますのでちょっと

引用します。

We really got our tit in the wringer this time": We really got into horrible trouble 

this time. A tit is a teat (breast/nipple), and a wringer is the part of what is known 

as a wringer washer (old-fashioned washing machine) ……. When the clothes 

were washed, the operator …. would take a piece of clothing and feed it through 

the wringer, while turning a crank. 

The wringer (formed of two wooden rollers placed close together) would squeeze 

excess water from the article of clothing.

私の幼い頃に使われていた、手回しで洗濯した衣類を絞り、水分を切るための装置に
なぞらえたフレーズです。なかなか面白いので長く引用しましたが、調子に乗っていると
（適当にローラーを回していると）大きなトラブルになるぞという脅しですね。

もっと品無く言えばどうやると「get caught」するのか興味が湧きますが、このへんで
止めときます。

さらに、Mitchelは、

「You fellows got a great ballgame going …… we are going to do a story on all 

of you」

という捨て台詞を吐きますが、これはよく分からない。

おおごとになるぞ（ホワイトハウスまでからむから）。

そっちにもいろいろ明らかにされると困る話もあるだろ」みたいな感じですかね。

（それともあることないこと言ってやる？これはあまりにも穏やかじゃないですね）

なかなか、エキサイティングな電話インタビューだったわけですが、

「Bernstein had perceived the excruciating depth of Mitchel’s hurt」、

そして、

「for the first time, Mitchel was flesh and blood, not Nixon’s campaign 
manager …….」
（つまり、彼が生身の人間であることを感じたということでしょうね。）

このコメントの扱いについて編集担当に聞くと、自分では判断できないと言う。

「Bernstein decided to include M’s comments in the article by insertion.」

最終確認としてBradleeで電話すると、Mitchelは酔っていなかったか、記者と
名乗ってインタビューしたかといった確認をした後、「leave everything but 
“her tit”」と指示し、掲載を許可します（ははは！）

翌日朝、Bernsteinに昨日コメントを求めた担当者から電話が来る。

Mitchelの発言引用まで含めて報道内容を知らせると記事の差止を求めてくる。

このやり取りがなかなか面白いです。

「Are you sure that you did not catch him at a bad moment?」

（Bernsteinは分からないと答える）

「You caught him at an unguarded moment.  He has been Cabinet member
 …. and he doesn’t want to show up in print like that.」

（Bernsteinは、Mitchelの言ったことをそのまま掲載するだけであると答える）

「If his composure is not guarded, is it fair to him to hold him accountable 

for what he said」

（ちょっと分かりにくいですが、「彼が平静な状態で無い時に話したことに対して

責任を問うのはフェアではない」ということでしょう。前の2つの発言では勝手に

Mitchelが冷静な状態で話したとは言えないと決めつけた上での主張です）

これに対して、Bernsteinは、

「...... you fellows hold me accountable for what I write and what I say, so 
it is not unreasonable to expect any less of Mr. Mitchel. He’d dealt with the 
press before.」

と反論します。なるほど、衡平論というやつですね。

この担当者は、さらに上の人に話せないかと聞いてくる。編集主幹のBradleeならと

答えると、

「I certainly don’t want to make an independent decision to talk to Bradlee」

（日本語的に言うと「上の者に確認しないと」というところですか）

Bradleeは、Mooreの

「...... in the morning, he was not having all his thoughts collected」

という弱々しい弁明に対して、

「...... it boils down to the question of whether Mr. Mitchel said it or not, and 

whether the report identified himself as a report, and if he did it, my requisites 

have been satisfied」

ということで

「refused to kill the insert」

します。

ということで舌戦が活発になってきました！
