「英語にハマりませんか？」No.35

そういえば、日曜日には、「for change」で、「Sex and the City」をオーディオブックで

シャドーイング/音読しています。

 

ちょっと休んでいたのですが、復活します。

 

こんな本を今頃、それも音読でなんてどういう趣味と言われそうですが、ヤバイ単語/表現

大好きな私としては、irresistibleな題材です。通常のお堅い話題と表現からがわりと変わる

世界です。

 

一応章立てでそれぞれ特定のテーマ別に小さなエピソードが集められています。

今回読んだのはChapter 21（206ページ）の「Women who run with wolves: Perennial

bachelors? See ya」です。

 

「run with wolves」というのは歌の題名になっていますが、意味はもうひとつ分かりません。

 

「永遠の独身者」（結婚するつもりのない男）と続いているので、危険な遊び人と付き合う

女性たちなんて感じですかね。こういう柔らか目はちょっと不得手です。

Simonという独身者（会社経営者で、いわゆる「eligible bachelor」です）にその前の

週パーティーで訪れた女性から電話がかかってきます。

 

Simon：「Terrific party the other night.」

女性：「I’m glad you enjoyed it, because nobody did.」

Simon」「Really？」

女性：「It’s you, Simon. Your behavior is reprehensible. It’s disgusting.」

Simon：「What did I do?」

女性：「You brought that bimbo. …… No one can stand it anymore.」

Simon：「Hey. Hold on a second. …… She is a very bright girl.」

女性：「．．．Why don’t you get a life?　Why don’t you get married?」

 

という他愛のない会話です。

「reprehensible」ね。

「deserving of blame or strong criticism」で、「it is a strong word」です（Web辞書より）

 

「bimbo」はコメント差し控えます。

 

「get a life」－「いいかげんにしろ、ちゃんとしろ」ということで、使用上の注意としては

「Most often used in the imperative, as a derogatory dismissal to somebody considered

pedantic or stuffy」とありますので、上記の場合は少し変則的な使い方ということになります。

 

こういう簡単な単語でイディオムになっているのは結構多いですね。聞き逃すことも多いし、

ちょいと厄介です

Simonはこのことを他の女性に話します。

 

Simon：「For some reason, everybody is telling me that my behavior is reprehensible. …….」

女性：「I see.」

Simon：「My relationship with Mary isn't working out, so I took a beautiful young girl .... to

this party. She’s a nice girl. And she’s a friend. And everybody was on my case about it.」

 

ポイントは「be on one’s case」ですね。「distress/persecute」（あれこれ嫌味を言ったりして、

悩ませるという感じです）

 

「jump on one’s case」というのもありますが、こっちは「assault」（攻撃/非難する）になります。

そういうことで、週末はこういう話題が良いですね。

 

心は温まりませんが。
