「英語にハマりませんか？」No.37

さあ、「All the President’s Men」の第2弾でーす。

まず、本筋には関係ないけど、ウォーターゲートの犯人についてこういう描写が目を引きました。

「The tallest of the suspects ….…. a square jaw, perfect teeth and a benign expression that

seemed incongruous with his hard-edged features.」

 

「benign」－優しい、温和という意味で使われています。

「incongruous」―　私が思い浮かぶのは「unmatched」ですが。「inconsistent」も類語です。

本筋に戻ると、被害者の民主党側は、次のような政治家らしいコメントを出します。

 

「The Democratic national chairman …. said the break-in “raised the ugliest question

about the integrity of the political process that I have encountered in a quarter-century

of political activity. No mere statement of innocence by the campaign manager will dispel

these questions.」

 

「ugliest question… 」以下はいかにも大げさな表現ですね。無関係という発言だけではこの

疑問は晴れないぞと。

Washington Postによる関係者への取材は続き、ついに捕まった侵入犯がホワイトハウスの

中の人間につながります。

 

侵入犯のアドレス帳に同じく名前が出てくるHoward HuntというPR会社のコンサルタントに

事情を聞くと、

 

「Good, God!」と言った後で、「In view that the matter is under adjudication, I have no

comment.」だそうです。「捜査中の案件はお答えできません」というおなじみのコメントですが、
adjudicationとはまたいかめしい単語を使うものです（アメリカ人、結構好きですね）。

ホワイトハウスのコミュニケーション担当官に問い合わせると、

「He (Hunt) had worked as a White House consultant on declassification of the Pentagon Papers.」（これは、ニューヨークタイムズがすっぱぬいたベトナム戦争関連の機密文書です。
その機密指定解除の判断という地味そうな仕事です。）

さらに、
「I’ve looked into the matter very thoroughly, and I am convinced that Mr. Colson or anyone else at the White House had any knowledge of, or participation in this deplorable incident.」

なるほど、官僚的な答えは響きが万国共通ですね。

「deplorable」なげかわしいという響きですね。（lamentable）

なお、「The comment was unsolicited.」（問わず語りで出てきた）

上記の取材の結果、ワシントンポスト紙は「White House Consultant Linked to Bugging Suspects」という記事を出します。

これに対して、

「The White House press secretary answered a question briefly by observing: “Certain
elements may try to stretch this beyond what it is.」
（事実をことさら大げさにしようとしている向きが見られる、というところかな）

翌日になると、

「Democratic Party chairman charged that the facts were “developing a clear line to the
White House, and added: “We learned of this bugging attempt only because it was bungled. 
……… I believe we are about to witness the ultimate test of this administration that so
piously committed itself to a new era of law and order just four years ago.”

失敗に終わったから分かったので、明らかになっていない盗聴行為がまだあるのではという
指摘。

「ultimate test」とはまた大げさですな。
「piously committed itself」－あれだけ固く誓ったのにということですか。

これで、1章終わりです。

この本を理解するポイントは次々と登場する名前と肩書きを覚えることですね（できれば、
誰とつながっているかも）。そうは言っても、これからどんどん出てきます。
