「英語にハマりませんか？」No.51

「All the President’s Men」の続きです。

 

Bersteinは、フロリダのDA、Dardisにまた呼び出されますが（「he said It would be worth

his while to come down to Minami again」という甘言）、また待たされる！
待っている間、彼の対抗馬である候補者のスキャンダル情報を取引材料とされ、選挙戦に
利用されたことを知り、怒る。

 

（district attorneyは選挙で選ばれる役職で、米国では政治家への第一歩です。いきおい、

マスコミに取り上げられやすい犯罪を上げたりする政治的行動が目立ちます。）

ようやく会えたDardisは、軽い謝罪の後、なぜ問題の資金はメキシコを経由したのかを

説明してくれます。

 

「It’s called laundering.　You set up a money chain that makes it impossible to trace

the source. The Mafia does it all the time. So does Nixon.」

たとえとは言っても、マフィアとNixon大統領を一緒にするのは、あやしげだと感じていると
いうことでしょうか。

匿名集金のシステムについても語られます。

 

「If Democrats were reluctant to contribute to the campaign of a Republican

presidential candidate, Stans assured them that their anonymity could be absolutely

ensured, if necessary by moving their contributions through a Mexican middleman

whose bank records were not subject to subpoena by U.S. investigators.」 

 

寄付が禁じられている会社についても同じことができるということですね。

「To guarantee anonymity, the “gifts,” whether checks ……., would be taken across

the border to Mexico, converted to cash in Mexico City through deposit in a bank

account established by a Mexican national with no known ties to the Nixon campaign….」

 

「Allen, the head of the Nixon campaign organization in Texas, was merely the conduit

for the funds moving to Mexico …………….」

この3つの文章を読むと、ロンダリングの全貌がかなり分かります。ちょっと読む速度は

遅くなりますが、情報を整理しながら読み進めていくと、徐々に分かってきて理解が深まる

ような書き方になっています。

 

全ての寄付（民主党支持者や禁止されている企業も含む）を一度メキシコに送り、そこから

戻す。取り仕切っていたのはStansとのこと。

関係者の弁護士Haynes（breezy, swashbuckling style）（軽く、ちょっと威張った感じの

話し方の人物）からも話を聞きます。

 

この人物が話す部分のオーディオブックのナレーションは結構テキサス人になりきっている

のでちょっと聞き取りが大変です。発音も、表現も。2-3回読まないと分からない。

 

（このナレーター、後で出てくるニクソン大統領がインタビューに答える部分でも本人を真似

ようとしています。結構似ていて、ちょっと笑えます。これは生で聞いたら分かりませんね。）

 

ということで、ここでは少し長めに引用します。

 

「Maury came through here like a godammed train.　He was really balling the jack

(*act with speed). He’d say to the Democrats, the big money men who’d never gone for a

Republic before. “we got this crazy man（環境庁の長官のことを指している）… close your

factory as let the smokestack belch（規制を厳しくということらしい）

 

He’s a hard man to control….. People…. need to cut through the red tape when you’ve

got a guy like that on the loose （こういう人が自由にやりたいことを行うという状況になると

規制の網の目をくぐるために色々必要だと）

 

Now, don’t misunderstand me; we’re not making any promises, all we can do is make

ourselves accessible（われわれは、結果は約束しないけど、アプローチをしやすくするだけ

ーよくある逃げ口上です）。

 

But the message was indelible（メッセージは消えない/消せない、つまり、はっきりしている）

ということで、Mauryは頼りになる男で、「do his Mexican hat dance（例の細工をして）」に

よって、民主党や企業がニクソンに寄付をしてもばれないようにした（it would all get lost

in Mexico）ということらしいです。

 

やれやれ。疲れた。

そうこうしている間にGAOの調査報告書が出ますが、それによれば、89,000ドルどころでは

なく、推定750,000ドルが「washed across the border」と判明。

大統領候補に指名されたニクソンは、カリフォルニアでこの問題に初めて答え、「どちらの側も
新しい法律に違反している」と言い逃れます。そして、

 

「What really hurts in matters of this sort is not the fact that they occur, because

overzealous people in campaigns do things that are wrong. What really hurts is if you

try to cover it up.」

 

と格好のよいことを言っているのですが、実は知っていて隠していた！

 

さらに、大統領は、これまで新聞に名前の出た「laundering」がらみの人物（Hunt, Liddy,

Stans, Mitchel, Huntなど）についてホワイトハウスは現在雇用しておらず、関係ないという

説明をします。

 

トカゲのしっぽ切りですね。
